Hi all! We’ve heard your feedback and we’ve been working hard to make it easier to bring your avatars into High Fidelity. Here’s our roadmap for improvements to the Avatar Pipeline:
RC77: Accepting more Skeletons
One of the main difficulties we’ve seen is that there are many existing avatars around the internet that are rigged to a different standard than we accept. To solve this problem, we’re unveiling the High Fidelity Avatar Exporter for Unity. Unity has a helpful tool called Humanoid which can accept many different types of avatars and standardizes them into a recognizable T-pose. You can then use our exporter to generate the .fst file, ready for use in High Fidelity.
RC78: Host Your Avatars with Us!
We know not everyone has their own hosting service like Amazon S3. For your convenience, we are now offering an easy way to host your avatar with us! RC78 will introduce a new packaging tool which will allow you the choice to upload your avatar. It will then be available in your inventory to use anywhere you’re logged in. For you perfectionists out there, we’ve also made it easy to do updates on your hosted avatars so you can keep making changes without filling up your inventory with copies.
RC79 and Beyond:
There are many avatars out there on the interwebs, and you may encounter various issues as you try and use them in High Fidelity. We will keep improving our tools to address as many of these issues as we can. Our top priorities involve making it easier for your avatar to be the correct scale, setting up facial expressions and mouth animations, and allowing you to edit materials on the avatar. We also want to give you more detailed troubleshooting messages when you bring an avatar into High Fidelity – so if you encounter problems, you know how to address them.
We welcome your feedback and questions as we continue to make improvements in our avatar pipeline. We hope this project will allow you to creatively express your identity and enrich your time in High Fidelity.
