"Second Life grid closes down in 2017" - Linden Lab Blog [April Fools 2016]

#1

Just came in: http://www.lindenlab.com/releases/second-life-grid-closes-down-in-2017
[EDIT]Site seems to be down/bugged out. Probably because the blog server isn’t used to this much traffic.

[EDIT2]Daniel Voyager just posted this on his flickr account:

I mean, it’s a reasonable step for Second Life, but they’re shutting down the grid rapidly. Quote:

The original Second Life grid, ‘Sansara’, will be open for residents until end of March 2017.

I’m currently still in shock. I mean, yeah, Second Life is old and wouldn’t run until the end of time, but I like it there. Plus all my scripts won’t work in there, as they are seemingly changing the scripting language to C#…
What are your thoughts on this?

But… it isn’t April 1st here yet

#3

I was going to say, pesky Europeans should wait until 12am SLT before posting that stuff :stuck_out_tongue:

#4

I wasnt even thinking of that but knew it must be bs because the SL grid is not called Sansara, its called Agni.

Nice - April fool! ________________

Who knows when SL1 will fade, but yes, it is true that scripting in Sansar is not LSL. It is a totally different model too. There will not be easy porting of scripts nor can just anyone create scripts (applets) either. Sometimes, scorched earth policy on legacy stuff is a good thing. It does eliminate having to recreate tons of bugs because of backward compatibility.

Best April fools yet!

It maybe April fools. But this may it be a joke. And it’s been a pain in my side, sense the day Ebbie Linden announced it. As I was at that development meeting, when he announced it to the TPV’s. And I’ve watched it erode and undermine some of the best, developers and content creators in second life. But what strikes me as odd, is that Ebbie had said they was not killing second life as long as it continued to pull a profit. So it maybe real.

the page shows to be no page, but I honestly do not find this to be funny at all. as it is the kind of stuff, that has destroyed moral with good developers.

#11

Just goto Town Hall and dance it away

#12

Am not falling for that one…

While it is believably written, it is a very poor joke in my humble opinion, especially since there is limited information about Sansar being given to SL Residents. People in SL are nervous enough about the changes going to happen. If this hits the grid, it will cause a panic and more will leave what has become a very valuable social and creative asset for many. We won’t mention the amount of real currency people pump into the grid.
